Best practice
Best Practice is a management idea which asserts that there is a technique, method, process, activity, incentive or reward that is more effective at delivering a particular outcome than any other technique, method, process, etc. The idea is that with proper processes, checks, and testing, a project can be rolled out and completed with fewer problems and unforeseen complications (Wikipedia, Feb 2007).
Capacity building
Capacity building processes are designed to help people in rural Australia understand and manage their changing circumstances thereby improving stocks of human, social, financial and natural capital (Cooperative Venture for Capacity Building, 2005).

Ecological footprint
The area of productive land and aquatic ecosystems required to produce the resources used and to assimilate the wastes produced by a defined population at a specified material standard of living, wherever on Earth that land may be located (Source: Alcamo, J. et al., 2003. Ecosystem and human well-being. A framework for assessment. Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. Island Press, 245 p.).
Enterprise
A business, company, or comparable organisation. An enterprise may be property focused and comprise a number of land use types. (Wikipedia, Mar 2008).
Environmental Management System (EMS)
An environmental management system (EMS) is part of a management system of an organisation (enterprise, authority, etc.), in which specific competencies, behaviours, procedures and demands for the implementation of an operational environmental policy of the organization are defined. The most popular kind of EMS is ISO 14000 (Wikipedia, Feb 2007).
Environmental audit
An analysis of the technical, procedural and decision making aspects of an EIA carried out sometime after a proposal has been implemented (Dougherty, T.C. and A.W. Hall (1995), Environmental impact assessment of irrigation and drainage projects. FAO Irrigation and Drainage Paper 53).
Farming system
A class consisting of all farms with similar land use, environment and economy: comprising the farm household, its land and the systems of cropping or livestock production for consumption or sale. A farming system is a decision making unit and land use system based on agriculture. (FAO (1993) Guidelines for Land Use Planning. FAO Development Series 1. Rome.).
Freshcare
The national, on-farm food safety program for the fresh produce industry. Freshcare links food safety on farm to the quality and food safety programs of the other members of the fresh produce supply chain. An Environmental module has been developed. (FarmSAT, TFGA).

ISO 14001
environmental management standard ISO 14001 is the environmental management standard against which organisations are assessed. It is an internationally accepted specification for an environmental management system. ISO 14001 is generic and flexible enough to apply to any organisation producing any product or service anywhere in the world (Wikipedia 13th February 2007).

Land suitability
The fitness of land for a specified kind of use. (FAO (1993) Guidelines for Land Use Planning. FAO Development Series 1. Rome.).
Land use planning
The systematic assessment of land and water potential, alternative patterns of land use and other physical, social and economic conditions for the purpose of selecting and adopting land use options which are most beneficial to land uses without degrading the resources or the environment, together with the selection of measures most likely to encourage such land use. Land use planning may be at international, national, district (project, catchment), or local levels (town) levels. It includes participation by land users and managers, planners and decision makers ad covers educational, legal, fiscal and financial measures. (FAO (1993) Guidelines for Land Use Planning. FAO Development Series 1. Rome.).
Land use system
A particular land use type applied to a particular area of land. (FAO (1993) Guidelines for Land Use Planning. FAO Development Series 1. Rome.).
Land use type
A kind of land use described in enough detail to assess its land use requirements and to plan the necessary inputs. The amount of detail varies with the leve, scale and purposes of the survey, from generalised land use types, such as dairy farming or irrigated agriculture in reconnaissance surveys, to detailed descriptions of plants, management, inputs, etc. in more intensive surveys.(FAO (1993) Guidelines for Land Use Planning. FAO Development Series 1. Rome.).

Management Action Target (MAT)
Short term (1-5 years) targets realting mainly to management actions or capacity building which contribute to long term resource condition targets.
Multi-criteria analysis (MCA)
A method of formalising issues for decision, using both "hard" and "soft" indicators, not intended to yield an optimum solution but rather clarifying positions and coalitions (FAO Glossary).
Natural resource management (NRM)
The management of natural resources in an integrated fashion, recognising the values of both conservation and productive use of natural resources and striving to achieve sustainability in all resource use.
EditP, Q, R
Property Management Planning (PMP)
Also termed Whole Farm Planning, involves looking at all the natural resources, people resources and financial resources available on the farm and working out how these can best be used to maintain a sustainable business enterprise. (FarmSAT, TFGA).
Property Management System (PMS)
A voluntary, structured, step-by-step approach to managing an agricultural business. The system can be used to identify and manage risks, which can occur as a result of businesses activities, and to capitalise on opportunities for improvement over time. (FarmSAT, TFGA).
Quadruple bottom line (QBL) reporting
Quadruple bottom line reporting embraces a further component – governance. More broadly still is the emergence of sustainability reporting. This seeks to more closely align reporting, underlying management practices and measures of corporate performance with the notion of sustainable development (CPA Australia, 2007: http://www.capaustralia.com.au).
Resource Condition Target (RCT)
A target set within the context of a regional NRM strategy which is achievable in a time span of 10 - 20 years. They are specific, time bound and manageable targets relating to the resource condition against the minimum set of matters for regional targets set out in the National Framework for NRM Standards and Targets.

Sustainable agriculture
The use of farming practices and systems which maintain or enhance the economic viability of agricultural production, the natural resource base and other ecosystems which are influenced by agricultural activities. (Standing Committee on Agriculture (1991) Sustainable Agriculture. Standing Committee on Agriculture Technical Report No. 36. CSIRO Publishing, Melbourne.).
Sustainable development
Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (Brundtland Report- Our Common Future (WCED, 1997)).
