Safeguarding Aboriginal heritage - Water Notes 30 (Bucktin, H.) 2002 This Water Note is intended to provide community members and government staff with an understanding of the importance of rivers and wetlands to Aboriginal people and why there is the need for consultation. The Water Note focuses on legal responsibilities under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972 and the Native Title Act 1993 and the preferred approach before, and during, river and wetland restoration activities to ensure that sites of heritage or spiritual significance are protected. The note also provides a brief overview of the spiritual significance and history of rivers and wetlands to Aboriginal people.
