Background

South Coast region

South Coast region

The South Coast NRM region of Western Australia is undergoing significant change in land use and development while at the same time there is increasing competition and conflict for access to natural resources which are declining in quality and availability. The strategic and statutory land use planning system administered by local governments provides some opportunity to intervene in the process of land use change and development to ensure that land use is located appropriately, that resources are developed and managed sustainably and repair of past damage is supported. In the past, integration of land use planning processes with NRM has been poor due to lack of information and knowledge by planners of the impacts of rural development and how they can participate in improving NRM through land use planning processes. This project is one way of redressing this problem.

Planners across the region required the information, knowledge and skills to enable them to make decisions which will effect more sustainable land use and development. Recognising this, South Coast NRM have provided funding for an initiative titled “Building Complimentary NRM Frameworks”. Objectives of this project are to provide NRM network support to local governments in the South Coast NRM region experiencing development pressures. This support is proposed to be in the form of rural and peri-urban land use guidelines together with spatial land resource information, training and ongoing network support.

The focus of this project is the ‘Development of an NRM web enabled land use support tool’ (support tool) which will provide a knowledge base of guidelines and resources for best practice planning of specific land use and development in the region. The development of the support tool has been recommended as one way of providing planners spread through the region with relevant and timely information and knowledge they need to integrate NRM with strategic and statutory planning processes.
